Chapter Eleven

Jessica and Kris followed Jenndal into the control room and Kris said, “Jenndal, do you have a warmer coat, gloves and a hat that Jessica might borrow?”

Jenndal pulled a candy cane from her mouth and twirled it on her finger. “Sure, have it back in a jiffy, Jess.” She took off up the steps and disappeared from view.

“So what do you have planned?” Jessica asked, her curiosity piqued.

“Well you’ve seen Svalbard and the Arctic, but I thought you might like seeing where we spend the summers. It’s still covered in snow, but, I thought you might like it.”

Jessica moved into his arms and smiled. “I would love that.”

“Here you go,” Jenndal said as she came back down the steps. She handed Jessica a red wool hat and gloves, as well as a matching scarf and a black wool coat.

“Thank you,” Jessica replied, taking the items. She removed her own coat and slipped into the one Jenndal brought her, and then added the hat, scarf and gloves.

“Jenndal, can you transport us to Gamvik?”

“Where at in Gamvik?”

Kris appeared to think about it for a moment and then said, “How about the Slettnes Lighthouse?”

“You got it, big man,” Jenndal pushed some buttons on the control panel, all ready to go.”

Jessica and Kris took their places on the pad and she nervously closed her eyes. When she opened them, she grabbed her stomach and attempted to keep from throwing up. After a couple of deep breaths, she looked up at Kris and smiled. “That is the weirdest experience.”

Kris chuckled and held his hand out for her. “I had her send us here, because I figured there wouldn’t be too many people around. I was right.” He said looking around.

Jessica looked up at the lighthouse in awe. It was rather beautiful and she said so. “When was it built?” she asked.

“Originally it was finished in 1905, but then it was damaged in World War II, and had to be restored in 1948. It went fully automated in 2005 and it’s one of our local historic sites.” Kris smiled, pulling her closer. “I like to come here in the summer. We have more tourists then.”

Jessica nodded. “I see.” She smiled up at him. “So how far away from here is your summer house?”

“Not far.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and they started walking and just enjoying the surrounding nature as Kris pointed out favorite spots along the way.

After about fifteen minutes, they came to some wooden fencing, much like you’d see for horses, with posts held together with two thick wooden slats. It would never keep out predators or people, but it lined the property they were entering. “Is this it?” Jessica asked.

Kris nodded as he opened a swinging gate in the fence line. “It is.”

Jessica went through the gate and past a cluster of trees and then spied the house. It was a bright blue with a red door. “It’s a real house,” she commented and the blushed as she laughed. “I mean, it’s a house-house, not a um, spaceship house.
